Disney is expanding the Descendants universe with Hidden Heroes: A Descendants Story, an all-new musical coming soon to Disney Channel and Disney+. Instead of the offspring of famous heroes and villains, this spin-off centers on the children of Disney’s most memorable sidekicks. It’s a new direction for the franchise, giving the characters who have traditionally been in the background the chance to step into the spotlight.

The film introduces us to a new group of teenagers who have been brought up on stories about their famous parents. Now it’s up to them to show what they’re made of. As with the previous films, fans of the Descendants franchise can expect lots of music, dance, comedy, and magic. But this time around, the story also explores the idea of supporting other people while also finding yourself.

A New Adventure Starts at Sidekick Academy

The biggest addition to the Descendants universe is Sidekick Academy, a secret school for the children of Disney’s legendary sidekicks, training them for adventures of their own. At Auradon Prep, the next generation of heroes and villains is being groomed, but at Sidekick Academy, it’s all about teamwork, loyalty, and quick thinking—the stuff that makes a great sidekick.

Life at the academy is not always peaceful. Two mysterious villains infiltrate the school, and the students are suddenly faced with a real threat before they have had a chance to fully prepare. Without heroes to save them, they are forced to depend on each other and use all of the knowledge they have learned. This challenge serves as the central theme of the story, as the students realize they are possibly capable of much more than simply copying the actions of others.

Introducing the Next Generation of Disney Characters

The cast includes several new actors playing characters related to classic Disney figures. Dior Goodjohn stars as Jennie, the highly energetic daughter of the Genie from Aladdin. Momona Tamada stars as Yzma’s daughter Zara, and Jacob Rodriguez plays Kronk’s son Kronk Jr. from The Emperor’s New Groove.

The supporting cast further advances Disney’s animated legacy. Eva Fossaceca Smedley plays Meri, the daughter of Merryweather in Sleeping Beauty, and Harry Jones plays Lou, son of Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast. The film also introduces Mrs. Potts’ children, played by Rhys Dawkins, Connor Wong, and Kyra Wong. This introduces even more familiar family ties for longtime Disney fans.

The film appears to be interested in demonstrating the evolution of these new characters, not just depending on familiar names. While their parents may be famous, the story allows them to step out of the shadows and create their own identity in the Descendants universe.

    The Film’s Creative Team

Hidden Heroes will be directed by Jude Weng, whose past credits include Finding ‘Ohana and Only Murders in the Building. The film is produced for Disney Kids & Family, with a script written by Tamara Chestna, Eydie Faye, and Emma Fletcher.

Production is set to begin in mid-August 2026, following the release of Descendants: Wicked Wonderland. While Disney has not yet announced a set premiere date, the film will premiere on Disney Channel and Disney+ as Disney continues the franchise’s legacy of reaching audiences on both television and streaming.

A Different Type of Descendant Story

One of the more interesting things about Hidden Heroes is how it shifts the franchise’s focus. The previous Descendants movies explored what it was like to be the child of a hero or villain. This story asks a different question: what happens if you are expected to be the hero’s sidekick instead of the hero?

This concept introduces new character dynamics. Zara is more calculating than the outgoing Jennie, and Kronk Jr. brings a different flavor of humor and compassion to the group. As the students learn to trust each other, they also learn that being a sidekick is not about living in someone else’s shadow. Sometimes the people who work behind the scenes are just as important as the heroes we all love.

    Growing the Descendants Universe

Hidden Heroes takes Disney’s Descendants franchise beyond its first cast and setting. Instead of another direct sequel, the studio is exploring the various sides of its fairy-tale universe, bringing in new schools, characters, and compelling tales that tie into classic Disney films.

If the film is successful, Sidekick Academy has a lot of potential to be its own series set in the Descendants universe. The concept allows Disney to bring in more descendants of fan-favorite sidekicks while keeping the world feeling fresh. Whether this turns out to be a one-off adventure or the start of a new spin-off, Hidden Heroes: A Descendants Story looks ready to show that even characters who usually stay in the background have stories worth telling.
