According to box office reporting from Deadline, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is just about ready to hit another major milestone. The Sony and Marvel Studios movie, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, had reached roughly $671.2 million at the domestic box office through Tuesday, helped by a surprisingly strong $17 million Monday. Discounted ticket prices also gave the film a bit of a boost on Tuesday, and based on the current numbers, it should cross the $700 million mark in North America on Wednesday.
That is a pretty big number, and it puts Spider-Man: Brand New Day in some very select company. Deadline points out that only six movies have ever made more than $700 million domestically. If the film gets there as expected, it will also become only the fourth MCU movie to reach that figure, joining Avengers: Endgame with $858.3 million, Spider-Man: No Way Home with $814.8 million and Black Panther with $700.4 million. Not bad company for a movie that’s still relatively early in its theatrical run.
The film doesn’t look ready to slow down just yet, either. Heading into its third weekend, Deadline expects Spider-Man: Brand New Day to remain comfortably at No. 1 with somewhere between $57 million and $72 million over the three-day frame. That would mean a drop of around 50% to 60% from its second weekend, which would be a perfectly healthy hold for a movie at this stage. For comparison, Avengers: Endgame fell 57% during its own third weekend, so the comparison isn’t quite as wild as it might sound at first.
If Brand New Day lands somewhere around the $60 million mark this weekend, it should pass $750 million domestically by the time Sunday is over. More importantly, that would give the movie a pretty comfortable cushion as the summer box office starts to wind down. School is also going back into session in many places, which usually means fewer weekday moviegoers, but the film has already built up enough momentum that an $800 million finish is starting to look less like a stretch and more like a realistic possibility.
And then there’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. Its $814.8 million domestic total is the number that stands out now. Passing it would give Brand New Day another major achievement and would make the movie the highest-grossing Spider-Man film ever at the domestic box office. That’s obviously still a little way off, and a lot can change during the next few weeks, especially once the late-August competition starts taking up screens. Still, if the current pace holds, a final domestic total somewhere around $810 million to $845 million doesn’t seem unreasonable. For now, though, the immediate goal is much simpler: $700 million is right there, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day is almost there.
