Wonder Man Showrunner Andrew Guest Breaks Silence Following Marvel’s Shocking Cancellation

In the wake of the unanticipated call from Marvel to axe their Disney+ offering, showrunner Andrew Guest speaks out about the short shrift Wonder Man was given.

Marvel Studios’ about-face on Wonder Man has been one of the more forceful in an industry not short of corporate U-turns. The decision to cancel a second season of the well-regarded Disney+ offering was all the more of a shock given it had been renewed, and now Andrew Guest, head writer and showrunner, has issued a frank response to the matter.

Guest made his views known on social media in the wake of the change of plans, eschewing any corporate hand-wringing for an expression of thanks over what has been a rewarding creative process. He expressed immense pride in the world the team built, and in his post he was effusive in his gratitude to the cast and crew, in particular such stalwarts as Sir Ben Kingsley, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and co-creator Destin Daniel Cretton, not to mention the fans and critics who have embraced the show’s brand of satirical superheroism.

For fans of Wonder Man, the news is staggering. One would be hard pressed to find anyone unenthusiastic after Disney gave the series the green light for a sophomore run in March and set the stage for the next chapter of Simon Williams in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Yet that momentum has come to a halt; there are reports the writers’ room for a second season was never officially convened and the team has been let go to work on other things.

In a way it is fitting that the project which had to overcome odds to get on screen should end so abruptly. At one point during production, according to Guest, the series was in danger of being written off by the corporation for tax purposes and shelved altogether, were it not for some intervention from the creative side after the 2023 Hollywood strikes forced a protracted shutdown.

While the series itself is dead, the book is closed on any more of its serialized exploits, though insiders suggest the characters may yet make an appearance in the wider MCU down the road. With Guest’s frankness the matter is settled, closing the chapter on what was a rather bold experiment from Marvel.
