Gilmore Girls Documentary Heading to HBO Max with Lauren Graham and the Palladinos

HBO Max is producing an official Gilmore Girls documentary that will take a deep dive with creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, star Lauren Graham and key cast and crew members.

HBO Max is developing its first-ever official documentary about Gilmore Girls, which premiered more than 25 years ago. The feature-length documentary will serve as a retrospective on one of television’s most enduring comfort shows.

The documentary, which has yet to be titled, will likely explore the inner workings of the beloved dramedy and look at how a little WB series about a single mom and her teenage daughter became a pop culture phenomenon that still attracts new fans decades later.

The film will center on creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and executive producer Daniel Palladino. They will be telling a good chunk of the story from their perspectives. Other cast and crew members, including Lauren Graham, who played Lorelai Gilmore in the show’s first run, are also involved. HBO Max said the documentary will look at the creative partnership that launched the series and will include never-before-seen outtakes, behind-the-scenes footage and pages from scripts that have never been made public.

The project is from Bonni Cohen (Athlete A, An Inconvenient Sequel). It is produced by This Machine for Sony Pictures Television along with Warner Horizon Unscripted Television. R.J. Cutler, Jane Cha Cutler, Amy Sherman-Palladino, Daniel Palladino, Mark Blatty, Elise Pearlstein and Trevor Smith, from Cohen and Melissa Robledo, are executive producers.

This marks the first documentary to receive official endorsement from the creators of Gilmore Girls. This is notable, because another project has been under development for a long time. The independent documentary, originally titled Searching for Stars Hollow but later changed to Drink Coffee, Talk Fast, has already interviewed a number of former cast members, including Kelly Bishop, Jared Padalecki and Chad Michael Murray. HBO Max has yet to set a release date for the documentary.

Lorelai Gilmore (Graham) and her daughter Rory (Alexis Bledel) lived in the fictional town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut, where they dealt with life, love, and endless cups of coffee. The series aired from 2000 to 2007, for anyone who missed out on Gilmore Girls the first time around. In 2016, the show was revived with Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, a four-part revival that reunited much of the original cast and introduced the show to an entirely new generation of viewers on Netflix. Although the series was pulled from Netflix in 2025, it remains popular and celebrated its 25th anniversary not long ago. Graham and Sherman-Palladino are also working on a companion book, which is scheduled to be released in fall 2027.

The documentary’s greatest strength for die-hard viewers is its cast.

The story is told by Amy and Daniel Palladino with Graham, and it brings a perspective to the project that no outside filmmaker could ever really replicate. Fans have always been curious about how Gilmore Girls was made, from the quick-paced dialogue to the grueling production schedule that kept everyone on their toes. The documentary could have been so much more engaging than a simple nostalgia piece if it was willing to go beyond the highlight reel and talk candidly about the roadblocks they faced producing the show, including the creative shifts that took place in the final seasons.

Gilmore Girls has had one of the more impressive second acts of any network drama, largely because of streaming. It seems that every fall, a new crop of viewers discovers Stars Hollow for the first time, and the veterans settle in for another marathon. That is a feat that few series can boast two decades after their initial release.
