What will remain of The Odyssey? Nolan’s film’s hopes for the 2027 Oscars

As early guild screenings get underway, Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is already reshaping the 2027 Oscar race, proving that scale and prestige can mix.

Hollywood’s calendar has its own predictable cadence, a rhythm in which the summer blockbusters are put on the books by their ledger before the more serious prestige fare makes its appearance with the turning of the leaves. But after Christopher Nolan’s worldwide launch of The Odyssey, the talk in the industry has made an abrupt and uncharacteristic turn. With guild and Academy screenings now making their way through Los Angeles, London and New York, the three-and-a-half-hour Greek epic is at something most tentpoles cannot claim: it has inserted itself right into the 2027 Oscar conversation.

Then again, for an R-rated take on Homer, the obstacle was never so much about the money as it was institutional. One does not often see a studio put its weight behind a three-hour historical drama of such uncompromising vision and cede full creative control to an auteur for a summer release. And yet, judging by the sentiment in the major guilds after some well-attended 70mm showings at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater for the insiders, Nolan appears to have closed the gap between the commercial and the high-art.

The Academy Response: A Question of Craft

Voting members are reacting to a film that seems to exist on its own technical plane. You will find traditionalists who chafe at a runtime of this length, but the general view from producers, editors and cinematographers is that the work is a high-water mark for practical filmmaking. Some veteran voters are already putting forward the idea in private that Nolan is doing more than save the box office; he is an auteur redefining what can be done on a studio scale, building on the kind of institutional clout Oppenheimer had with its historic run.

There is also word-of-mouth touting the emotional core of the piece. Matt Damon has been praised for his grounded, weary presence, and there are those pointing to the more intimate moments, like the scene where Odysseus is reunited with Argos. In marrying the raw emotion to the grander practical effects, The Odyssey has sidestepped the kind of clinical tone that tends to alienate the acting and writing branches of the Academy.

Redefining the Path to the Dolby

It is a long road to the Dolby Theatre, and the early summer stirrings are just the first part of a campaign that will cost millions in time and money. Studios would normally keep their prestige product for the autumn festivals in Toronto, Telluride or Venice.

Nolan has thrown a wrench in that conventional wisdom. By commanding the critical attention of the industry and putting down a cultural marker in the middle of summer, The Odyssey has upended the usual awards formula. We will have to wait and see if that translates to gold when the year is out, but it is evident that the director has once more compelled the industry to see past the receipts and understand that you can have elite artistic ambition and uncompromising scale in the same frame.
