After five seasons, Power Book III: Raising Kanan is officially done. The series finale on August 7 is packed with Kanan Stark’s final steps in his transition into the man that fans first met in Power, plus emotional confrontations and heartbreaking losses. There are no big action sequences, but instead the episode looks at the long-term effects of choices made from the beginning and explores topics such as family, betrayal, and the consequences of one’s actions.

Warning: Major spoilers for the ending of the Power Book III: Raising Kanan series ahead.

    Marvin’s Death Changes Everything

The final episode begins with everyone trying to deal with the aftermath of Marvin’s death. Raq knows that the family has never been in more danger, and Jukebox is in the depths of mourning. At the same time, Jarita tells Kanan she is pregnant, which could change his life. She stresses that the choice to participate is entirely his, and she is prepared to proceed regardless.

As the episode unfolds, Jukebox follows the trail her father left behind before he died. Eventually, she finds Flossie, who identifies Marvin’s killer. Raq, however, is obsessed with the need to save her own life. She tries to negotiate a deal with Pino, turns down an offer that has personal conditions, and even considers working with law enforcement to protect herself and Kanan. She also tries to reach Stefano via Flossie to find another way out, but she soon realizes that most of her avenues have dried up.

The episode weaves the stories of these characters together, as it seems like they are all making irreversible decisions.

The Franchise Looks Ahead, and Kanan Looks Ahead

Kanan also tells Breeze about what happened to Raq. Kanan argues that she should be allowed to leave New York permanently, considering that arrangements had already been made to kill her. This is one of the few times he tries to separate business from family, though those around him may disagree.

The finale also features a scene that longtime Power fans will recognize immediately. Kanan briefly meets two young boys who will later play major roles in the franchise. He tells them to come back later, creating a direct link to the upcoming Power: Origins series. Showrunner Sascha Penn said that even before the new series was officially announced, the moment was always supposed to be a bridge to the future. Mekai Curtis will reprise his role as Kanan in the next installment of the story.

Apart from the larger story, Jukebox has a final, quiet moment with Marvin, leaving a personal memento in his memory. It is a brief, understated scene, but it conveys a great deal of information about her loss.

Finally, Raq and Kanan Say What They Need to Say

Kanan goes to Stefano and pleads with him to save his mother’s life, knowing that time is running out. Stefano doesn’t say no right away, but he insists that Raq must come to him and talk directly before they can agree on anything.

Before the meeting, Kanan and Raq have one of the most emotional conversations in the whole series. Kanan finally tells Raq the information he’s been holding on to for years. Raq admits that a lot of the family tragedies can be blamed on her choices. Kanan admits that he does not want her dead, all circumstances notwithstanding. He also admits that he has spent most of his life hoping she would be the mother he had always wanted.

It is a candid conversation that does not magically fix their relationship, but it does give both characters a level of understanding they haven’t had in a long time. The other person who watches from afar is Jukebox, and her observations change the equation quite a bit.

    Jukebox Makes the Final Decision

Raq is packing to leave New York, having agreed to Stefano’s terms. Jukebox comes to her house, and Raq doesn’t get a chance to leave.

Jukebox acts with deliberation, not in a rage. She kills Raq, knowing that Kanan will be the one to suffer the real pain, for she believes that death is not enough punishment for Raq. Later, she finds him and tells him what happened, even inventing what Raq supposedly said in her last moments. Kanan finally finds his mother’s body and comes to terms with what has happened.

The episode ends with a voiceover from Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as the older Kanan. Rather than being the end of the story, Raq’s death is presented in the narration as the moment at which Kanan begins to truly become the character that audiences already know from Power. “This story has always been the story of South Jamaica, Queens,” he says, “and now it is the story of everyone who has followed him.”

An after-credits scene offers one last emotional contrast. The family is shown in a hospital room, with “Good Times” playing on the TV as the footage cuts back to the day Kanan was born. It reminds us that this family was happy for a short time before the betrayals and violence.

    The Basis for the Conclusion

In fact, Patina Miller has revealed that she knew of Raq’s fate before filming the final season, which allowed her to guide the character’s arc to the ending she wanted. She has also spoken about the emotional significance of the last scenes of Raq, saying she used her own grief while shooting. Miller states that during their final confrontation, Raq knows exactly what kind of transformation Jukebox has undergone and somehow accepts the things that are about to happen.

Showrunner Sascha Penn told The Hollywood Reporter that it was intentional to have Jukebox kill Raq, as it avoided the more predictable outcome of Kanan pulling the trigger himself. “It’s a tragic but fitting decision,” Mekai Curtis said, “because it takes away the last person who really connected Kanan to his history.” The heartbreak of the ending is heightened by the fact that Jukebox ultimately intervenes after Kanan and Raq briefly reconcile.

The ending ties in with the underlying theme of Raising Kanan. Over the course of the series, love, loyalty, and family have been sources of discomfort rather than pleasure. By ending the story with the killing of another family member, the show reinforces the idea that the greatest threat was never outside of the family, but always inside of it.

And simultaneously, the conclusion lays the foundation for the development of Power: Origins. Now that Raq is gone, Kanan is completely untethered. There is nothing tying him to his past. The closing narration makes it clear those days are gone forever; the final flashback reminds us of the life that might have been. It’s a fitting end to Raising Kanan and a natural beginning to the next chapter in the Power universe.
