Spider-Man: Brand New Day Claims the Biggest Domestic Opening in Box Office History

Spider-Man: Brand New Day sets an all-time box office record with a historic $360 million domestic opening weekend, rewriting industry history.

With Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Sony and Marvel have rewritten the record books. In its first weekend the Tom Holland vehicle did a remarkable $360 million across the U.S. and Canada, edging out the all-time domestic debut of $357 million that Avengers: Endgame established back in 2019. On the world stage the film has taken in $932 million, good for the second-biggest opening ever after Endgame’s $1.2 billion.

The debut marks several major milestones. It is the best opening of any Spider-Man to date and the most successful launch for co-star Zendaya and director Destin Daniel Cretton; it is also the largest opening weekend Sony Pictures has seen. Equally impressive is the trajectory of Holland’s solo franchise, which has been on an uncommon upward path. Where Homecoming brought in $117 million and Far From Home $92 million, and No Way Home $260 million, Brand New Day has left those old benchmarks in the dust.

The day by day figures are telling. The film had a record $72 million in Thursday previews and posted an all-time best of $169.8 million for opening day with them included. Saturday was $101.5 million, Sunday $88.7 million. Even without IMAX, where Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey was dominating premium screens, the premium large formats were outstanding. PLFs were responsible for some 24 per cent of the domestic take, with Dolby Cinema, ScreenX and 4DX all setting record numbers.

Tom Rothman, chairman of the Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, was among the first in the industry to voice his pride in what has been achieved. Producer Amy Pascal pointed to the way the film marries emotion with spectacle and Kevin Feige of Marvel Studios spoke of the bond the characters have with their fans. An A CinemaScore and good recommend numbers from exit polls bode well for a long run in theaters. Some analysts project the film finishing over $2 billion worldwide, making it one of the few to do so and the fourth of 2026 to cross the billion dollar line.

The rest of the market took notice. North America’s box office for the weekend is estimated at an all-time $429 to 430 million. The Odyssey held up to a Spidey assault for a decent $51 million in its third outing, taking its domestic tally to just under $396 million.

From an analytical perspective, there is more to this opening than raw numbers. Looking at the circumstances, Brand New Day had to contend with a Nolan picture for the better screens and yet delivered a historic performance on the basis of audience appeal alone. I would say it is proof of how robust the demand is for event superhero fare when it has a certain distinction. In not going after another multiverse crossover and instead delving into Peter Parker’s isolation and the way his powers are changing, the filmmakers have hit upon a commercial note that a bigger ensemble piece may not. The record shows people will come out for a Spider-Man that is as human as it is action packed.

Holland’s run has been equally impressive in its growth. Most franchises of this vintage will wane or plateau, but this has only picked up. To go from the $260 million of No Way Home to $360 million is testimony to the pull of a character with such goodwill and continuity behind him. Can it be kept up down the road? With inevitable talk of succession bound to arise, we will have to see. But for now, in a marketplace as crowded as it is, Brand New Day has shown the industry that a superhero movie with emotional heft can still remain a box-office powerhouse.
