There is no denying the high level of anticipation as Marvel Studios readies Spider-Man: Brand New Day for its Friday, July 31 theatrical debut. The film has been well received in early reviews after a star-studded world premiere at Los Angeles’ El Capitan Theatre, with many hailing it as the most mature and grounded of Tom Holland’s work to date as the web-slinger. And while moviegoers are making their plans to witness Peter Parker’s latest solo adventure in a world that has moved on without him, eyes are already on what comes after the credits roll.

It is a departure for a franchise accustomed to filling its end-credits with stingers. Where you might expect the usual dual sequence from the Marvel playbook, this installment has but a single post-credits scene.

Inside the Leaked Stinger and What It Sets Up

Spoiler Warning: Some mild thematic details of the film’s ending are discussed below.

The one and only post-credits moment has already been put under the microscope by social media and those in attendance at early showings. But do not be looking for a comedic tag or an unexpected villain to make an appearance as was the way of Homecoming or Far From Home. This is something else entirely, a more cosmic and strategic affair in keeping with the MCU.

What unfolds is a view of a futuristic tracking map and digital interface zeroed in on Queens. A red marker lights up to indicate where Peter Parker is before the vantage point pulls back from Earth and out into the void of space, the small signal left to drift among the stars.

A link to the Multiverse Saga

There is no mistaking the impact of the stinger’s minimalism; it has set off a firestorm of fan theories on social media. To many in the industry and among the viewing public, the sequence is an overt prelude to Avengers: Doomsday, the next big crossover. It is taken as a sign that before the studio gets to its wider Phase Six plans, Peter will be dealing with multiverse complications or even find himself off-planet.

Marvel Studios has been characteristically quiet when it comes to any official word on what the scene means, but the way it steers clear of local street-level fare is telling enough. It is a clear indication that Peter’s sphere of influence is extending well past New York City once more. For those who make the trip to the theater on opening night and want to put off the online spoilers, you need only stay put for the scroll to get a proper introduction to the MCU’s next major chapter.

There is a tendency for today’s big franchise blockbusters to feel they must unload some six or seven loose ends in the credits, and in doing so they water down what has come before. Spider-Man: Brand New Day takes a different approach. With one well-placed tease on the cosmic horizon it has fans talking, but otherwise the film holds its narrative cards.
