Hollywood has a way of running in circles when it comes to modern literary fantasy. The pattern is all too familiar and risk-averse: they will put an option on a bestseller, let it languish in the corporate development purgatory that is their specialty, and in the end dilute it into something for the streaming services. So when Tomi Adeyemi’s Children of Blood and Bone made its mark in 2018 with its West African mythology, it was easy to think it was headed for the cinematic graveyard.
The project did have its share of turbulence. There were studio handoffs and a brief, unproductive period at Lucasfilm before the rights lapsed. But in time, it has come to rest with Paramount Pictures. With Gina Prince-Bythewood (of The Woman King) directing and a firm theatrical date set for January 15, 2027, what is emerging is no ordinary franchise prospect but a substantial piece of prestige world-building for the big screen.
A Tortured Road to the Screen
To get Orïsha to the point where it can be put on film has been an epic in itself. Any follower of Adeyemi’s work is well aware of the early frustrations and the creative dead ends that came with the territory. It is not uncommon for studios to balk at putting nine figures behind an original fantasy epic without the benefit of some pre-existing nostalgic draw.
Paramount has shown a different kind of confidence, however. By giving the project an exclusive IMAX and theatrical run and making room for Adeyemi in the process, they have shown they understand that this is not content to be managed. They are treating it with the same canvas one might expect for an Avatar or a Marvel outing.
Restoring Orïsha
In the novel from which this is drawn, we are taken to the fictional kingdom of Orïsha, a place steeped in the kind of vibrant, West African-inspired lore where the maji once held sway over magic. A decade ago, that was put to an end by the tyrannical King Saran. His purge was merciless; he left the non-kosidán in charge and made of the divîners an underclass.
Things change when Zélie Adebola, a divîner with a will of her own, encounters Princess Amari. The king’s daughter has made her way out of the palace after seeing him put her closest friend to death, and she is in possession of a sacred scroll – an artifact of great power that can put magic back in the land. With her brother Tzain at her side, Zélie puts in with the princess. What follows is a dangerous trek across the kingdom to see the ritual through, and to put one over the forces of the crown, prince Inan included.
Ensemble Casting at Its Finest
You do not have to look hard to see what puts Paramount’s version of this story in a class of its own. The ensemble has a pedigree that is simply staggering. Then there is the call sheet, which with Thuso Mbedu as the formidable Zélie at the helm, looks like an Oscar ballot and a lesson in prestige television rolled into one.
The core youth are well in hand with Damson Idris, Amandla Stenberg and Tosin Cole, but the production has built on that with some very heavyweight names: Viola Davis, Cynthia Erivo, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Idris Elba and Regina King. It is a clear statement of intent. While many a blockbuster these days will put the onus on digital wizardry for any sense of emotion, to put a high-fantasy tale in the hands of actors of this calibre is to value dramatic texture over the spectacle.
The Weight of Expectation
Expectations are high. With the first-look footage coming out of the promotional machine, the cultural stakes are plain to see. To adapt a universe so steeped in Yoruba mythology and put it under a global lens is no small task. But Prince-Bythewood is in charge, and anyone who saw The Woman King knows she can bring a kind of visceral choreography and emotional intelligence to historical or mythic action that few can match. It is a project set up to be something different.
In a way, if Hollywood is to get over its franchise fatigue, it will be by putting forth material of this sort: uncompromising in its artistry and on a scale that is both breathtaking and culturally resonant. When Zélie appears on the IMAX in January 2027, it may be more than the restoration of magic in Orïsha; it could signal a new chapter for the original blockbuster.
Hollywood studios often panic when faced with a non-white IP heavy on myth, preferring to sand off the edges for a more homogenized product. There is an ambition to Paramount’s Children of Blood and Bone that indicates they are not going to shy away from the unapologetic nature of Adeyemi’s world. Should they pull it off, it will change the definition of a modern tentpole.
